What Happens After Your RYA Level 1 or Level 2 Sailing Course?

You’ve completed your RYA Level 1 or Level 2 sailing course. You’ve learned the basics, started understanding how the boat responds to the wind and hopefully discovered just how enjoyable dinghy sailing can be.

But what happens next?

For many adult sailors, this is actually the most important stage. A sailing course gives you the foundations — but regular time on the water is what builds confidence and experience.

At Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club, we provide a friendly environment where sailors can continue developing after completing their initial training.

From Learning to Sailing

One of the biggest challenges after a sailing course is simply getting enough practice.

Tacking, gybing, rigging and controlling the boat may make sense during your course, but doing them regularly helps everything become much more natural.

That’s where joining a sailing club can really help.

At WGCSC, you can sail alongside more experienced members, ask questions, improve at your own pace and gradually become more confident on the water.

You Don't Have to Start Racing Straight Away

Sunday is our main racing day, but don't let the word “racing” put you off.

Club racing is one of the best ways to improve your sailing. Following other boats around a course helps you understand wind direction, boat handling, starts and sailing efficiently.

Nobody expects a new sailor to be at the front of the fleet!

The important thing is getting involved, learning and enjoying yourself.

Thursday Evening Sailing

During the summer we also run Thursday evening sailing sessions, providing a relaxed opportunity to get onto the water, practise and meet other members.

Boats can also be hired through Better, subject to their availability and requirements.

More Than Just Sailing

Joining a sailing club isn't only about becoming a better sailor.

You'll meet new people, make friends and gradually learn how a sailing club works — from helping with boats and racing to understanding rescue duties and supporting other sailors.

There are also social evenings and plenty of conversations over a cup of tea after sailing!

Ready for Your Next Step?

WGCSC doesn't provide formal sailing training. If you're starting from scratch, we recommend completing appropriate training through Better at Stanborough Lakes or another recognised RYA training centre.

But once you've achieved RYA Level 1 or Level 2, or already have suitable sailing experience, joining a club is a great way to turn those first sailing lessons into a hobby you can enjoy for years.

Your RYA course doesn't have to be the end of learning to sail. It can be the beginning of becoming a sailor.
