Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club has been part of the local community since 1973. For more than 50 years, generations of sailors have come to Stanborough Lakes to enjoy dinghy sailing, take part in racing and spend time with people who share their love of being on the water.
From the beginning, the club has been shaped by its members. Some came looking for the excitement of a close race. Others wanted to improve their sailing, meet new people or simply enjoy a few hours at the lake. What brought them together was the welcome they found and the friendships they made.
Racing has always been a big part of club life. Over the decades, members have competed for club trophies, taken part in pursuit races and returned year after year for favourite events. There’s plenty of friendly rivalry on the water, followed by stories, advice and laughter back on shore. Every race offers a chance to learn something, whatever your experience.
Junior sailors have also been an important part of our history. The club has given younger members opportunities to develop their skills, grow in confidence and discover the fun of sailing alongside others. For many, those early days on the lake have sparked an interest that has lasted well beyond childhood.
Our archives capture the people behind the sails: beginners finding their feet, familiar faces returning each Sunday, volunteers lending a hand and members whose sailing has taken them on adventures far beyond Stanborough. These stories remind us that a club is built as much by the people on shore as by those out racing.
Much has changed since 1973. Boats have come and gone, new members have joined, and each generation has added something of its own. Yet the pleasure of a good sail, a bit of friendly competition and a warm welcome at the lake remains at the heart of WGCSC.
Today, we’re proud to carry that spirit forward. We welcome experienced racers, people returning to sailing after years away and newly qualified sailors ready for their next step. Wherever you are in your sailing journey, there’s room to make friends, get involved and feel part of the club.
WGCSC’s story is still being written — and we’d love you to be part of it.
