Thursday Night Sailing - 24th September
Thursday evenings are all about getting on the water, having fun and enjoying sailing together.
During the summer months, we meet at Stanborough Lakes for relaxed evening sailing. There’s no racing pressure — just an opportunity to practise your skills, build confidence, try different boats and enjoy sailing with other club members.
Don’t own a boat? No problem! Boats can be hired from Better at Stanborough Lakes, subject to availability.
It’s also a great social evening, whether you’re a newer member or have been sailing for years.!
Punch Bowl Trophy - 27th September
The Punch Bowl Trophy is one of the most famous and entertaining events in the Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club
Held at Stanborough Lakes in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, this unique three-hour dinghy pursuit race combines competitive sailing, handicap racing, teamwork and some wonderfully chaotic crew changes!
Each boat has two crews, with sailors swapping over every one or two laps. Clever changeovers are encouraged… although spectacular disasters are often far more entertaining! There’s even a special prize for the most spectacular crew change.
Whether you're racing or watching from the shore, the Punch Bowl Trophy is sailing, teamwork and controlled chaos rolled into one brilliant day.
Come for the racing. Stay for the changeovers!

WGCSC Games Evening – Saturday 17th October
Join us at Mead Hall from 7pm–11pm for a relaxed evening of games, laughs, good company and a fish & chip supper!
£10 per person – prebooking essential to guarantee your fish & chips.
There’ll be plenty to play, including Rummikub, Canasta, Yahtzee, Twister, Mastermind, bar skittles, safe darts, Connect Four, conkers, paper darts, Super Boggle and more.

Learn About Racing - Club Night - November
Ever watched a dinghy sailing race and wondered what all the flags, whistles, shouting and boats apparently heading in different directions actually mean?
Our Learn About Racing evening at Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club is designed to make dinghy racing simple, friendly and fun.
Perfect for sailors who can sail but want to understand how sailing races work, we'll cover starting a sailing race, race signals and flags, starting-line bias, the first beat, sailing tactics, race preparation, finishing, basic racing rules and what happens when a race is abandoned.

Get ready for the Vice Commodore’s Cup 2026
Join us for a fantastic day of dinghy sailing, sailing racing and competitive club racing in Hertfordshire. The Vice Commodore’s Cup is one of our club trophy races and a great opportunity for sailors of different experience levels to enjoy dinghy racing at Stanborough Lakes.
Our sailing club welcomes sailors looking for competitive sailing, recreational sailing, club racing and year-round dinghy sailing.

Thursday Evening Social Sailing & Pizzas
Our latest Thursday Evening Social Sailing at Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club may not have gone quite to plan, but it still turned into a brilliant evening.
Unfortunately, the sailing had to be cancelled because of lightning — and with nobody particularly keen on having a shocking experience on the water, we decided staying ashore was the sensible option!
That didn’t stop the evening though. More than 20 sailors still joined us for a relaxed and enjoyable social night, with plenty of laughs, conversation and lots and lots of sailing stories — although we suspect a few of them may have become slightly taller as the evening went on!
The Thursday evening socials are all about bringing members together, giving newer sailors the chance to meet others and creating a friendly community around the club.
Normally, the evenings provide an opportunity to get out on the water, build confidence and enjoy some relaxed sailing without the pressure of racing.
This time the weather won — but the social certainly didn’t disappoint.
A great turnout, a great atmosphere and another reminder that Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club is about much more than just what happens on the water.

Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club enjoyed a fantastic day at the Howard Centre, where club members came together to promote sailing and welcome new faces to the club.
Thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of our volunteers, the event attracted lots of interest from local shoppers and resulted in several new members joining. It was a great opportunity to showcase our friendly club, affordable membership, and the fantastic sailing available at Stanborough Lakes.
A huge thank you to everyone who gave up their time to support the event. Your passion and commitment helped make it a great success, and we look forward to welcoming even more new members to the club in the future.
Rescue Boat Refresher
A number of Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club members recently took part in an RYA Safety Boat Refresher course delivered by the fantastic team at Better Stanborough Park Water Sports Centre.
The refresher gave our safety boat crews the opportunity to update their rescue techniques, towing skills and on-the-water procedures, ensuring they remain confident and ready to provide safe, effective support during club racing, training and social sailing sessions. The RYA Safety Boat qualification is designed for those providing safety cover for dinghies and other small craft, making it an essential skill for any active sailing club.
A huge thank you to the Better instructors for an enjoyable and professional course, and well done to all of our members who took part. Keeping our rescue crews' skills current helps ensure everyone at WGCSC can continue to enjoy safe and fun sailing throughout the season.
