Thinking about joining a sailing club but worried you're not experienced enough to race?
At Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club, racing is at the heart of what we do, with racing every Sunday morning throughout the year at Stanborough Lakes.
To take part, you should be able to sail a dinghy independently and safely. As a guide, you should have RYA Level 1 or Level 2, or equivalent previous sailing experience.
You don't need previous racing experience. If you can sail but have never raced before, that's absolutely fine — we'll help you get started.
If you're completely new to sailing, you'll need to learn the basics first through Better at Stanborough Park or another recognised RYA sailing centre.
One of the easiest ways to begin is to buddy up with an experienced member.
You could spend your first few weeks crewing with someone, learning the course, starts, mark rounding and basic racing tactics.
When you feel confident, take a boat out yourself and join the fleet. If you're already confident sailing independently, simply get on the water and give racing a go.
Nothing prepares you for sailing quite like actual sailing.
Your first goal isn't winning — it might simply be getting around the course!
Follow the experienced sailors, ask questions and enjoy yourself. Every race builds confidence, improves your boat handling and teaches you something new.
Coming along for your first race? Keep it simple:
Arrive early – give yourself plenty of time to meet everyone and get organised.
Check the weather – know what conditions you're likely to face.
Bring suitable sailing clothing – including appropriate footwear and a buoyancy aid.
Ask about the course – make sure you know which marks you're sailing around.
Understand the start – ask someone to explain the starting sequence.
Buddy up – crew with an experienced member if you'd like some extra confidence.
Don't worry about winning – concentrate on sailing safely and completing the course.
Ask questions afterwards – it's one of the quickest ways to improve.
Most importantly, enjoy it!
During the summer we'll also be running Social Sailing on the last Thursday of each month.
These relaxed sessions are ideal for getting more time on the water, practising your skills and sailing alongside other members without the pressure of racing.
If you can already sail and want to race, improve, meet other sailors and spend more time on the water, we'd love to hear from you.
You don't need to be an experienced racer — you just need to be able to sail safely and be ready to give it a go.
Come and meet us, join WGCSC and make your first Sunday race the beginning of your next sailing adventure.
