Joining a sailing club for the first time can be exciting, but it can also feel a little daunting. You may wonder whether you have enough experience, whether everyone else will be better than you, or whether you will fit in.

At Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club, we understand those concerns. New sailors are always welcome, whether recently qualified, or returning to sailing after many years away.

One of the most important things is being able to develop at your own pace. There is no pressure to race before you are ready or to sail in conditions you are not comfortable with. Confidence comes with time, practice and support from the people around you.

One of the great things about sailing is that it really does level the playing field. Success is not simply about strength, age or gender. Technique, confidence, decision-making and the ability to read the wind are often far more important.

In fact, some of the top sailors at Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club are ladies, regularly competing alongside — and beating — the men.

Sailing is also about much more than what happens on the water. It is about meeting people, learning new skills, enjoying the outdoors and becoming part of a friendly community.
